Dr. James Axmacher, ​has his Doctorate of Pharmacy from Mercer University in Atlanta.  James has been a registered pharmacist and practiced since 1996 in Tennessee. He majored in geriatric pharmacology and has specialized in Medicare evaluations for the last several years. He is a trained compounding pharmacist with certification from PCCA in Houston, TX.  Maximizing the patient pharmacy experience with their insurance carriers has been James' passion as a pharmacist.  Jim was  born and raised in East Tennessee.  He enjoys his family life as well as his professional life, with support from his lovely wife Danna,  and two wonderful daughters.

Dr. Dennis Jay Insell, Pharm.D. has been a pharmacist at Apple Discount Drugs since June 2001.  Dr. Insell grew up in the Karns community of Knox County, where he is a graduate  of Karns High School.  Jay received an Associate of Science degree from Roane State Community College in 1997 and his PharmD (pharmacy doctorate) from the University of Tennessee at Memphis in 2001.  Jay is certified to give immunizations and has training in Asthma and Diabetes education.  Jay loves the outdoors.  He enjoys camping, farming and of course UT football!!

About us

Apple Discount Drugs  was opened in 1987 in its present location.  Our founder Tom Bright was the pharmacist with his wife Karen until his passing in 2005.  Karen continues to call Apple Discount Drugs home.   Jay Insell, PharmD and Jim Axmacher, PharmD  along with the supporting staff of Certified Pharmacy Technicians including Elizabeth "Lizz"  Johnson, Vickie Joo, and Amanda West are always available to do all they can to make sure your experience at Apple is positive. We pride ourselves on knowing our customers by name and providing quality products and service.

Dr. Karen Bright, Pharm.D.


A native of Clinton, Karen Mullins Bright graduated Clinton High School Class of 1971 and went on to pre-pharmacy studies at Carson Newman College.  Karen received her Doctorate of Pharmacy from the University of Georgia, cum laude, in 1976. She began her professional career with East Tennessee Discount Drug, first as an employee and then store manager as well as becoming an area pharmacy supervisor with SuperX Drug.  Karen and her husband Tom Bright started Apple Discount Drugs in February 1987.  Tom passed away in November 2008 after a short bout with leukemia. Karen has since re-married, Desmond Mahoney and is blessed with four children, four stepchildren and four grandchildren
